I like this outfit for Laura because it's obviously a costume. I think it makes sense for her to return to this look in the context of "I am definitely not Wolverine, I am merely Scratch, a dangerous mutant looking for work."

Aurora was just six years old when threats made against her family, her father being a member of Parliament back in the UK, lead to an attempt on her life and saw her sent to live with her aunties in Godscobh. It was for her own safety, they said. It would only be for a short while, they said. Weeks turned to months, however, and then months turned to years. And it wasn’t until Aurora was sixteen that her parents finally told her she could come back. That, despite having made no arrests or putting forward any credible suspects, the police and her family’s personal security were convinced the threat had passed. 

But after ten years of nothing but the occasional video call to check in, Aurora didn’t want to go back. She didn’t want to return to a country she barely remembered and a family she hardly recognized. She had a life in Godscobh, she had friends. She even liked her school! And her aunties had spent the past decade telling her how dangerous the rest of the world was, that she mustn't wander where someone might recognize her as her parents' daughter. Anonymity and obscurity were her comfort zone now, and the idea of suddenly being thrust into the spotlight was simply terrifying.

So she didn’t.

Between UK emancipation laws and the support of her aunties, not to mention the public spectacle trying to force her home would create, Aurora was able to stay in the United States. She graduated high school with honors. Gifted-kid burn out in her college years and the sudden newfound freedom almost saw her flunking college before she pulled it together long enough to get her associate degree. 

Piercing at the Underworld was supposed to be a temporary thing, a side hustle she’d gotten into just to have her own money in school, but after years of not being able to find a job teaching, she’s all but accepted it as her lot in life.

Notable character information: Aurora gets the unsettling feeling they are being watched every time they leave the house.

Her mother was born to nobility, for what little that still means, while her father only rose to prominence through the election process.

Has very little contact with her parents.

Didn’t go to the best college, but was able to get her degree in early childhood education.

After years of listening to her aunties tell her what a dangerous place the world is and warning her away from men, Aurora’s anxiety can flare up at the oddest of times, and she’s uncomfortable in large crowds or being alone with men.

She likes excitement and adventure, but not impulsiveness/spontaneity. She likes her adventures to be fully planned and scheduled well in advance.

there is a small section in the corner of while you were streaming, where van purposely stocks rainbow crosses, stars of david, crescent and stars, and other religious iconography that is obviously queer. it's not big or overt, but it's there if people are looking for it. it's her way of paying tribute to laura lee, of assuaging the guilt they still feel over the other girl's death (even if they were literally unconscious while this all was happening).

laura lee never made fun of van's obvious lack of heterosexuality, never tried to coerce or convince her that she was going to hell because she liked kissing girls, didn't do any of that "hate the sin, love the sinner" shit. she just was always the first to offer to split her lunch with van when they didn't have the money for the vending machine. some days, van wonders whether laura lee would still be alive if they had actually died in the wolf attack, but also tries not to go down that path too much because there's no point in doing so. but again, while van outwardly leans away from contact with the survivors, the signs are all there if people know where to look.

and if one day a blonde teenage girl walks in and picks up a rainbow cross while looking utterly petrified, van will give it to her on the house
